GHEP Receives Foundation Training Fund

Riverdale Park, MD: The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank, recently awarded the Global Health and Education Projects, Inc. (GHEP), the global non-profit organization based in Prince George’s County, Maryland, a 2014 Non-Profit Training Resource grant.

“The Foundation believes that organizations such as GHEP play a significant role in encouraging growth and progress in the community,” said Elizabeth Warn, President, TD Charitable Foundation. “The foundation is pleased to support GHEP’s community based efforts.”

The TD Charitable Foundation has a long history of supporting non-profit organizations and their important work. Since the inception of the non-profit training resource fund, the foundation has contributed over $123 million in grant funding to not-for-profit organizations in communities from Maine to Florida.

Receiving the award, Dr. Romuladus E. Azuine, Executive Director, GHEP, said that with the award, TD Charitable Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to excellence and quality of work of non-profit organizations such as GHEP through training and professional development of their staff.

“By making this grant award to our organization, TD Charitable Foundation is making a statement about its commitment to improving the lot of the poor and underserved in the local communities that we serve,” said Dr. Azuine.

“We are confident that the knowledge acquired from the funded training program will not only benefit us, but enrich other non-profit organizations and ultimately enhance our services to the communities and populations that we set out to serve through knowledge dissemination and technology,” said Dr. Azuine.

Dr. Azuine remarked that GHEP is not only excited about this award, but also humbled by TD Charitable Foundation’s recognition that local non-profit organizations need support in order to address the myriads of problems facing the low-income and indigent populations in communities they work.

Subsidized Private High School for MD Students

Subsidized Private High School for MD Students

Riverdale Park, MD: Low-income families who don’t have the financial resources to send their kids to private high school can now heave a sigh of relief! DonBosco CristoRey High School (DBCR), is offering opportunities for highly-motivated 9th to 12th graders to attend a quality high school almost free or at very subsidized tuition rates, thanks to a unique model that offers young people corporate work-study opportunity, according to school officials.

DBCR is located in Takoma Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC, and provides a rigorous college-preparatory catholic education with a unique approach incorporating faith, family, future, and fun to hardworking students with limited economic resources.

According to recruitment materials, “the high school attracts students with limited financial resources who are motivated to go to college and want to learn in a small school environment. All students work in professional jobs a few days a month to help pay for their education.”

School officials estimate that the actual cost of attending the high school is about $13,000, but by participating in the work-study program, they say, students can earn almost $7,000 which drastically reduces the family’s contribution to $2,500. About 90% of the students receive some form of financial aid which further reduces the family’s contributions, officials report.

Founded in 2007, DBCR is co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington and Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation of men devoted to apostolic and missionary activity and to the many different works inspired by Christian charity, but especially the service of young people, in particular those who are poorer and disadvantaged.

Open House: Parents and their children should attend DBCR’s Open House on Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM @ 1010 Larch Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912.

More Information: To learn more about the school and the opportunities, call 301-891-4750 or 301-270-1459 or visit its website by clicking www.dbcr.org

GHEP Partners with Nigeria, US NGOs

GHEP Partners with Nigeria, US NGOs

Washington, DC, USA: Determined to advance its international health program efforts, the Global Health and Education Projects (GHEP) is partnering with a Nigeria-based non-profit organization, Center for Alcohol, Drug and HIV Awareness (CADAHA) and a US-based counterpart, TransWorld Development Initiatives (TWDI), to address HIV/AIDS, drugs and alcohol problems across the 31 states of Nigeria.

In an historic event recently in Nigeria, GHEP Executive Director and Chief Technical Director, Dr. Romuladus Emeka Azuine, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CADAHA and TWDI setting the stage for a partnership designed to address the triple scourges of HIV/AIDS, alcohol, and drugs throughout the local communities in Nigeria, Africa’s most-populous country.

The MOU solidifies the three organizations’ collective vision to foster collaboration with similar international organizations to address the debilitating effects of drugs, alcohol, and the HIV/AIDS in the general population and also among specific groups with increased vulnerability to the negative effects of drug and alcohol misuse, especially those rural dwellers and populations that live in poverty, using internationally-renowned best practice guidelines.

Under the articles of the MOU, GHEP and the two partners agreed to collectively pool their resources to expand the reach of their programs aimed at addressing the health, social, and economic consequences of drug, alcohol use not only in the general population but in specific populations such as educational, law enforcement and workforce settings.

GHEP, the publisher of the International Journal of MCH and AIDS, will leverage its expertise in global health research, program implementation, and top-notch ability in dissemination of public health information across the world; CADAHA will bring its expertise in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and wide network with rural communities in Nigeria; and TWDI will bring its expertise in the design of humanitarian and partnership development.

“It is not always that you come across a grass root organization like CADAHA based outside of the limelight that is determined to address the huge public health burden from illegal drug and alcohol use. This MOU sets the stage for GHEP to unleash its capacity building capabilities by drawing upon its array of grant makers, program managers, and academia to address the overwhelming, but unaddressed social, economic, and health inequalities arising from alcohol and drug use in developing world,” said Romuladus E. Azuine, DrPH, MPH, RN, public health expert and GHEP Chief Technical Director.

Through this MOU, we are positioned to addressing in full-scale the multifaceted issues surrounding alcohol, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS in Nigeria drawing upon the experience of experts from over 56 countries of the world across our three organizations, said Joe N. Nwokem, MPA, MEd, LCDC, alcohol and drug rehabilitation expert and CADAHA’s Program Director. “This MOU is a culmination of a relationship that has been in the works over the years and puts CADAHA in a class of its own and sets the stage for us to bring leadership in these areas in Nigeria and beyond,“ adds Nwokem.

Magnus A. Azuine, PhD, public health expert and TWDI President, said that with the MOU, TWDI looks forward to touching the lives of indigent populations in rural areas in Nigeria under this agreement utilizing its skills in educational programming and delivery. “We will invest our efforts in developing top-notch courses and programs in the three foci areas which have long-been overlooked,” he said.

“We are excited to be partnering with an organization led by a US trained and licensed drug and alcohol expert who understands the international rigor of implementing educational and rehabilitation programs that are proven to work according to the standards set in the United States but with the richness of the local content across the Nigerian states,” Azuine added.

GHEP Launches New Website, Global Outreach

GHEP Launches New Website, Global Outreach

Washington, DC: As a young three-year organization, GHEP is still in its nascent years. But with the strides that we’re making, it looks like the stars are lining up for us. And for good too. in 2011, we got registered and obtained our charter from the State of Maryland. Same year, we began to set up the infrastructure for a new organization. We obtained our postal mailbox, started to change the face of global health research with our journal, IJMA, and successfully filed and obtained our 501(c) (3) approval mid 2014. Next few years will be more fruitful and we will soar even higher.

It’s in this regards that we rejoice as we launch our new website today. Right from the day we opened our gates to the public and to support our communities, we’ve always had a presence on the internet. But the new website gives us not only a new look. It gives updated functionality to engage our constituents regardless of whether they’re traditional or Generation Y audience. Our goal is to use a bottom-line approach to engage you and ensure that we leave a lot of details to where it belongs–right off and away from the corporate website.

Look Around: Please look around. Feel comfortable and do let’s know if there’s something that we need to fix. We welcome your comments. Don’t be shy; drop us a note using the comments box below. And while you’re here, please like us on Facebook and (as FB says) let’s know what’s in your mind today. Today is a good day for us and we are happy about this milestone.
