Baby Diaper Distribution

Diapers for Low-Income Families in Prince George’s County, Improving Maternal & Child Health

The GHEP Baby Diaper Program provides free infant diapers to low-income families in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and the surrounding areas who are experiencing “diaper need” and unable to purchase diapers due to financial hardship. By ensuring that new mothers have clean diapers for their 0-5-year-old infants, GHEP is contributing to the improvement in maternal health, reduction in maternal deaths, and improvement in child health and development.

Diaper need is when a mother or family cuts back on basic essentials, like food, utilities, or child care in order to afford enough diapers for their children. Essentially, parents struggle to provide their babies with clean and dry diapers that are necessary for them to grow and thrive.

Diaper need is a tremendous but seemingly unrecognized economic and public health problem for millions of families in our communities. Leading scientific journals, such as Pediatrics and Academic Pediatrics, estimate that 1 in 3 mothers in the U.S. experience diaper need, and that diaper need is an under-recognized social determinant for children and caregivers. The inability to provide diapers is more distressing to Moms than not having enough food for their families. Diapers cost over $100 per month and cannot be obtained with food stamps or women, infants, and children (WIC) vouchers because they are classified as “disallowed purchases” along with cigarettes, alcohol, and pet foods.

Studies have shown that mothers in families with diaper need report more difficulty with stress management, depression, and coping with trauma than those in families who do not suffer diaper need. These mental health conditions consequently impact their children’s overall health and development leading to health disparities. Allowing mothers to grapple with the false equivalence of deciding between food and diapers for their infants must not be allowed to stay.
